According to the New York Times, the original handwritten lyrics to “Born to Run,” Bruce Springsteen’s paean to love and freedom on the open road, is currently up for auction at Sotheby’s. The item, “neatly written in blue ink” and thought to date from 1974, features a sketch of the song many of us know, with notes written in the margins. Certain key phrases from the song, such as the “tramps like us” line, are present in this early version. The seller has not been named, but the lyrics were throught to have once belonged to Mike Appel, Springsteen’s former manager. The lyrics are thought to sell for somewhere in the range of $70,000 to $100,000.
